A lesser known gem from the Newar community ( Nepal ) is Alu Pyaz Sadeko . This spicy dish is often served as a snack and is something akin to our boiled alu chaat - but with a real nice twist , a chownk of mustard oil !
5-6 Medium Sized Potatoes.
1 Tablespoon Mustard Oil.
1 Large Onion ( cut thickish and long , see pic )
1/2 Teaspoon Haldi Powder.
Salt To Taste.
Red Chili Powder To Taste.
1/2 Teaspoon Timur Powder ( OPTIONAL ).
2 Green Chiles Chopped.
150 Grams Mustard Oil.
10 Green Chilies ( with a tiny slit ).
1/5th Teaspoon Methi Seeds.
Boil and peel the potatoes , greasy your palms with 1 tablespoon Mustard Oil and rub over the whole potatoes . Rest the potatoes 15-20 minutes .
With your hands crumble the potatoes , add all the other ingredients and lightly mix them .
Heat Mustard Oil till it smokes , throw in the methi seeds and the chilies and pour over the potato/onion when methi seeds change color to dark brown ( maybe 15-20 seconds ) . Mix well ,adjust flavors and always serve at room temperature / straight from the fridge.
Absolutely delicious - make it nice and spicy , which is how it's eaten !
